Lloyd Maday, ran auto shop in Evanston, dies at 84

Lloyd Maday was just 19 when he and his brother opened Maday Brothers auto shop at Central Street and Broadway Avenue in Evanston in 1951.

Both Mr. Maday and the shop became fixtures in the community. He was a coach in Little League, coached football and baseball at St. Athanasius Grade School in Evanston, and mentored young people interested in cars.

“I was working on a project in my auto shop class, when it turned into something more than I could handle,” said Mike Kennedy, who worked for Mr. Maday as a mechanic from 1969 to 1979, his first job out of high school. “My family knew Lloyd, so I brought my engine to him and asked for advice. He took a look, showed me where I was getting tripped up and helped me rearrange a few parts. He got it running smooth as silk.”

Maday Auto Services still stands on the same corner, though it was sold by Mr. Maday when he retired in 1999 to one of his longtime employees.

Mr. Maday, 84, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, in his Evanston home, his family said. He had been dealing with cardiac amyloidosis for over two years.

“There’s a huge amount to learn in this trade, and just working alongside Lloyd, I learned a lot,” said Peter Haracz, who worked for Mr. Maday for 15 years before taking over the business. “But in my mind, Lloyd was mostly defined by his relationships with his wife and children. He was a real family man.”
