Drinking your weed in tea form offers the same potent and long-lasting effects as edibles, but with little-to-zero calories. Tea is also an excellent option for individuals who don’t enjoy, or want to avoid the potential risks of, smoking but still want the benefits of cannabis.
What are the effects of weed tea?
Since weed tea is basically an edible, the effects are the same as consuming the same amount of the same strain via other edible methods. It can take about 30 to 90 minutes for the full effects of weed tea’s THC to kick in, but the actual onset you can expect depends on a variety of factors, including the makeup of your endocannabinoid system and other health factors.
It’s important to dose in moderation, follow the “start low, go slow” adage, and wait at least two hours after consuming cannabis tea before ingesting any more. Also, as an edible, the THC in weed tea metabolizes in the liver, which transforms it into the much more potent and long-lasting 11-hydroxy-THC. The effects of weed tea typically last up to eight hours.
What do you need to make weed tea?
It’s simple to brew cannabis tea with a few ingredients, supplies typically lying around the house, and your favorite bud. For this recipe, you’ll need to assemble the following:
- 1 gram of cannabis.
- 1 tbsp of unsalted butter OR coconut oil.
- 1 teabag, or loose-leaf tea, if preferred.
- 4 cups of water.
- Any ingredients you’d add to tea, such as honey or cinnamon.
- A mug.
- A teapot or saucepan.
- A spoon.
- A fine strainer, cheesecloth, or coffee filters.
How to make weed tea
To begin, grind your cannabis until it’s broken up but not completely powdered. You can also opt to chop your bud with a sharp knife. Be sure to separate all the stems and seeds from the mix, if desired.
Boil four cups of water in the teapot on the stove. Once the water boils, add the butter or coconut oil and allow it to completely dissolve. This fatty addition acts as a binder for the cannabinoids so they distribute throughout the tea.
Next add the cannabis and the teabag/loose-leaf tea. Allow to boil for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently. To boost the potency, you can add additional trim, stems, or flower during this step.
After 10 minutes, the tea should be thoroughly infused. Remove from heat and remove the teabag. Now it’s time to filter out the plant matter from your tea. Using a teapot, it’s easy to secure a coffee filter around the spout with a rubber band or place the filter inside the teapot. If you used a saucepan, secure the coffee filter over the top of a mug to strain the tea. Another option is to use a tea infuser for the cannabis and/or loose tea.
Voila, you’re ready to enjoy infused weed tea. Feel free to add any milk, cinnamon, honey, or lemon as desired. Sweet additions such as honey or sugar are popular choices to mask the distinct weedy flavor. Follow your heart and taste buds and enjoy!

Boiling your herb in hot water isn’t the only way to brew weed tea. You can also simply place cannabis butter or cannabis oil, such as infused coconut oil or products purchased directly from a licensed dispensary, in your beverage and allow it to dissolve in the hot water. Mix infused butter or oil with a teabag of choice, allow it to steep, and enjoy it with any milk, spice, honey, or sugar you desire. How to make weed tea Copy article link to clipboard. How to Make Weed Tea
August 24, 2020 by Pure Oasis
Cannabis tea—or weed tea— is easy to make and similar to any other edible. Some people prefer to make cannabis tea because it is a healthier alternative to other edibles like cookies, brownies or candy. Whether you want a relaxing cup of tea to enjoy while reading a good book, or you’re just looking for a fun project in the kitchen, weed tea is a quick and easy brew that is sure to lift your spirits. Like any other edible, weed tea is an effective way of consuming cannabis, a safe alternative to smoking cannabis, and will provide a potent and long-lasting high.
Steps To Making Cannabis Tea
The rule for any edible is to start small and work your way up gradually. Finding the right dosage for homemade edibles can be tricky at times, and it is much preferable to have a mildly underwhelming high than an overwhelming or overly intense high. Edibles can be extremely potent, especially if you have no prior experience with them. So be safe, enjoy responsibly, and have fun. This recipe will be using a ½ gram of cannabis, but if you would like to make stronger weed tea, you can use 1 gram of cannabis and 1 tbsp of butter instead of the quantities listed below.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- ½ gram of ground cannabis flower
- ½ tbsp. of unsalted butter
- 1 ¼ cups of water
- Cannabis grinder (optional)
- Fine strainer or cheesecloth
- Flavoring (e.g., honey, milk, or cinnamon)
Making Cannabis Butter
First, you will need to make your cannabis butter. This is a relatively simple process that just requires adding ground cannabis to butter and mixing. Butter is used because cannabis’ active component, THC, is not soluble in water. Butter gives the THC a fatty substance to cling to instead. The heat from the hot water and the fat from the butter allows the THC to seep into the tea from the ground cannabis.
- Grind ½ gram of cannabis flower (using a grinder is easiest) into fine but not powdered pieces
- Mix ground cannabis with ½ tbsp. of butter in bowl, making sure cannabis is coated but not soaked in butter
- Empty tea bag and fill with cannabis butter, then fold the top of the tea bag over several times to keep from the cannabis butter from spilling out
After you have your cannabis butter ready to go and placed inside your teabag, it’s time to start bringing the water to a simmer. Once the water is simmering (but not boiling), you are ready to add in your cannabis butter filled teabag.
- Bring 1 ½ cups of water to a simmer in a pot, do not allow the water to reach full boil
- Simmer cannabis butter tea bag for 30 minutes, reducing heat if water starts to boil
Adding Sweetening Ingredients
By now, you have a perfectly drinkable cannabis tea, but it might not be the tastiest. In order to add more flavor, you’ll probably want to add another teabag with the flavor of your choosing. You can also add in a sweetener of your choosing, such as milk, honey, or cinnamon.
- If you want flavored tea, add another teabag of your choice during the last 3 minutes of simmering
- If you would like to add honey, milk or cinnamon, stir in after removing from simmer
What To Expect After Drinking Weed Tea
As with any other edible, weed tea will take anywhere between 30-90 minutes to fully kick in. One of the most common beginner mistakes people make with edibles is thinking they haven’t kicked in yet when they are just taking some time to have an effect. For this reason, if you think your weed tea isn’t working as intended – WAIT FIRST. It may just need some more time to kick in and you don’t want to be feeling a double dose if you consume two servings in a short time period.
The effects of your cannabis tea will typically last up to about eight hours and it’s recommended that you wait a full two hours before consuming more tea after your first serving.
